Bank of New York Mellon and ACTION-Housing, Inc. United Way Day of Caring Event June 12, 2009
On June 12, 2009 Bank of New York Mellon, lead by the event chair, Ricardo Savido, President of Bank of New York Mellon Community Development Corporation, participated in a United Way Day of Caring event with ACTION-Housing held at Allegheny Independence House. Allegheny Independence House was formed in 1986 through a collaborative effort between ACTION-Housing, Inc. and United Cerebral Palsy. Allegheny Independence House (AIH) is a 25-unit housing development that was the first in Pennsylvania designed to meet the needs of persons with more than three functional disabilities. AIH offers the opportunity for a person with multiple disabilities to live independently in a specially designed building that removes the physical barriers that make most housing inaccessible to persons in a wheelchair.
Sixteen Bank of New York Mellon employees and ten ACTION-Housing employees joined to take on multiple improvement projects for AIH. A new accessible ramp was built to help clients gain entry to the front door of the building from the street above AIH, flower and vegetable beds where re-built, a fountain was put in, numerous landscaping projects where completed, and picnic tables where constructed. The work that the volunteers set out to complete this day was ambitious, but each project was fully completed and excellently done.
Residents of AIH and volunteers gathered for a picnic style lunch that allowed them to express their gratitude and appreciation for the BNYM employees. The day was a huge success that will stay in the minds in all involved.
