McKeesport Downtown Housing Holiday Health Event

On December 6, 2011 McKeesport Downtown Housing located at 523 Sinclair St. McKeesport, the former McKeesport YMCA, was the place to be for residents and locals looking to receive free flu shots, health screening for blood pressure, pulse oximetry, pulmonary function, bone density, body fat, and Carmon monoxide and refreshments, door prizes, and giveaways. The event hosted by ACTION-Housing, the Mon River Fleet of SHIPS, McKeesport Ambulance Rescue Service, and UPMC McKeesport was the second year these services have been offered at the site. A press conference was also held at 11:00 a.m. to recognize the efforts of the Mon River Fleet of ships, which is a collaboration of McKeesport, Duquesne, Braddock, and Hazelwood that has a mission to create far-reaching health initiatives beyond their individual catchment areas. In attendance was the Pennsylvania Deputy Secretary of Health, Martin Raniowski. McKeesport, Duquesne, Braddock, and Hazelwood joined together their State Health Improvement Plans (SHIPS) to centralize best practice programming and outcome data collection and to decentralize the dissemination of heath care information motivating healthy change at the community level. Combined, these cities have a startling 30% of its residents living below poverty level. The Fleet continues to work collectively with the PA Department of Health, Immunizations, on its yearly influenza and pneumococcal vaccine program. Over 5,000 vaccines are provided free of charge to residents in all Fleet communities each year.
